New businesses open their doors!

The South Worcestershire Air Quality Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) provides detailed guidance to developers on how to implement pollution prevention policies in the South Worcestershire Development Plan Review.

Proposals in the SPD include increasing the distance between new developments and sources of air pollution, such as busy roads. Good ventilation should also be built into buildings, the layout of developments should encourage walking and cycling, while the use of trees, open spaces, green roofs and other green infrastructure should be used to block and filter air pollution.

Once adopted, planners will be able to use the Air Quality SPD to decide on planning applications. It will also strengthen their ability to seek air quality assessments and ask for additional measures to be put in place when new developments are proposed in areas where air pollution is already high.

Passengers across the country will have better train services thanks to a new transport bill set out in the King’s Speech. The Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill has been introduced to Parliament on 18th July.

After years of unacceptably low performance, the bill is a landmark  change that will allow the Government to bring rail passenger services back into public ownership, amending legislation to make appointing a public sector operator the default, rather than a last resort. 

Our railways are essential in ensuring connectivity for all kinds of people across the country and unlocking their full potential is essential to growing the economy and lowering emissions from transport.

The privatisation model is failing passengers day-in, day-out. Publicly-owned passenger rail will put an end to years of waste and fragmentation on our railways and establish a more efficient, higher quality and reliable service.

The new laws will ensure rail services are run with the passenger put first.

With five bills, transport has the biggest legislative agenda, with plans to deliver the biggest overhaul to transport in a generation.     
The transport bills set out in the King’s Speech will be essential to delivering the Prime Minister’s missions for Government, and will be mission critical for kickstarting economic growth, unlocking opportunities across the country, and accelerating to net zero.

The commitments also see the Transport Secretary delivering on her

In the summer of 2012, Pershore Men’s team tennis hit a crisis point. We had very few players and no pathway for talented juniors to play in our teams”

 says Dave Morris, current Men’s Team Captain and interim Chair, who took over the role with a dream that the club could return to former glories.

 Now, 12 years later, Dave explains: “…

the club has over 30 regular men’s match players, a third of whom are juniors. They have achieved a total of 30 promotions across the summer and winter leagues that they play in. On Sunday in the South Warwickshire Summer League, Pershore A team secured the Premier Division title for the first time in the club’s history. Local lad Dan Walker, who was part of the winning team on Sunday, played his first match nine years ago, aged 12, and is now one of the clubs most reliable performers.”

In addition to the A Team win, the men’s B team - who also play in the Premier Division - contributed to the coveted success by taking five points out of eight off the runners-up Alcester A.

“This is a landmark achievement for our Club and is a tribute to great teamwork, from coaches, players, team captains and parents. We are set up well to continue this progress and achieve more success in the years ahead. We welcome new players of any age to come along and be part of a great team environment”

Dave and the team’s vision for the Club is to provide opportunities for junior players to play tennis, to raise overall playing standards and to make the club more inclusive.

 has been developed after feedback from small businesses suggested an online tool would be helpful to show when their turnover could require businesses to register for VAT and its effect on profits.

-   their total VAT taxable turnover for the previous 12 months is more than £90,000 -known as the ‘VAT threshold’ - until 31 March 2024 this was £85,000.

A VAT-registered business must charge VAT on eligible sales and can usually reclaim it on eligible purchases. 

There are around 300,000 new VAT registrations each year.

The estimator can help any business to see what registering for VAT could mean, as well as linking to further information about the registration process. It is also a useful tool for businesses operating below the threshold and considering voluntary registration.

The Worcester Fringe is Back for 2024

The pre-hospital emergency service which covers Herefordshire and Worcestershire hosted a Thank-A-Thon to show gratitude to its supporters in celebration of national 

(Sunday 7th July), a day dedicated to acknowledging and appreciating the kindness and generosity from individuals and businesses in local communities.

On Monday 8th July 2024 the charity’s aircrew, staff and volunteers contacted more than 28,000 loyal supporters to show their appreciation via phone calls and emails. It was a rewarding experience, as the team had the opportunity to speak with donors and let them know the charity genuinely appreciates every bit of support it receives, no matter how big or small.

Supporters who could not be reached by phone were thanked by email and via posts across the charity’s social media channels.

, which took place on Sunday 7th July, brings together millions of people across the UK to celebrate and give thanks to those that go above and beyond.

Emma Wood, head of fundraising and engagement for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support we receive from across the communities we serve. Whether it is our kind donors, volunteers, local businesses, or community groups, we are always so humbled by the generosity shown towards our cause.
“While we regularly thank our supporters in various ways throughout the year, 
the dedicated Thank-A-Thon was a great way for us to collectively show our gratitude and thank all of those amazing people who enable our aircrew to save lives and provide critical care to those in need.”

“Our team responds to an average of 12 incidents every day, and it’s only thanks to our incredible supporters that we can help those in urgent need across the six counties we cover. I was touched by the experience of making calls to our generous donors and to speak to just some of the amazing people who make our lifesaving missions possible.”
